Why the Website?
(Or, "Isn't This All a Little Vain?)
By Isaac M. McPhee, esq.
Of Course it's vain.  Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying.

An entire website full of self-promotion?  Can I really live with myself, knowing that this website is constantly out there, showering the entire world with my self-congratulatory prose and unabashed praise for my own life and work?

In a word, YES.

But besides my ego and apparent utter lack of humility, why did I decide to create this website, especially seeing as how I obviously have very few (if any) skills in web or graphic design (p.s. if you have some skills and want to help me in this area, you're more than welcome to), and seeing as how I rarely have anything of any real consequence to say?

The short answer goes like this:

What if one day I happen to publish a book or release a hit record of Rod Steward-inspired classic love songs? These things are not out of the realm of impossibility.

Or, even more likely, what if I happent to get picked off the street by some film or television director, who decides to cast me in his tv/movie/commercial/whatnot?  I live in New York, after all, where this happens every single day to some lucky person (in fact, it already did happen to me... sort of - I was in a nationally televised
commercial and very nearly got incredibly famous... very, very nearly).

If such a thing were to happen, and I were to suddenly become famous and wealthy, I would definitely want to create a website and make it the home for my official fan club.  But at that point, it would probably be too late.  As soon as I became famous, some internet expert would have recognized the possibilities and snatched up the domain name before I got the chance.  Then I'd find myself having to contact this little computer geek (who had been blessed with incredible foresight), asking him to please give me my name back.  And of course, he'd demand vast amounts of money, which I'd have (because I'd be famous, and part of being famous means you have lots of extra money), but that's not the point.  It's really the principle of the thing.

You should never have to make sacrifices just to get your own name... dot com.

So, I'm being pre-emptive.  I now own www.isaacmcphee.com - the ultimate in vanity domains - and no one can take that away from me.  And why should it be any different?  After all, there's a hitler.com and a greenriverkiller.com and a moveon.org... surely we can all agree that I deserve a website more than any of these.

And just so you don't go thinking that I'm far too vain and conceited... would a vain and conceited person post on his website a picture of himself riding a stupid little horse?  Surely not.
