The Galaxy Zoo

Even if you're not interested in space, astronomy or physics, there's still something fulfilling about this site, which has catalogued photographs of more than a million distant galaxies throughout the universe.  Obviously, with this many galaxies, it is impossible for scientists to manually analyze each one - so they get normal people like us to do it.  After a brief lesson on the basics of galaxy analysis and a fairly simple test, you can start siphoning through beautiful photographs of galaxies, sorting them into their various classes, knowing that you're actually doing work that may be of benefit to science.

Project Gutenberg

An online resource dedicated to preserving as many ancient texts as possible for future generations.  Thousands upon thousands of public domain books are available for free online.  This is one of my favorite places to perform research online.  At the same time, a website like this could not possibly operate without the help of countless volunteers, such as those found at...

Distributed Proofreaders

For anyone interested in preserving historic resources.  Distributed Proofreaders scan through digitized versions of books, page by page, searching for errors and helping to format the online version to coincide with the original.  It is really a fascinating and rewarding journey, working your way up through the ranks of proofreaders and becoming more proficient in these tasks.

An online place for anyone interested in writing can potentially get their work published, and be paid for their efforts. With thousands of categories to choose from, almost anyone can find some topic that suits them.  I've been writing alot in the history and science sections, though my articles have made their way into dozens of categories.
